Convenience Stores

Counter mats in convenience stores are used almost exclusively on the check out counter. They therefore must not interfere with the checkout process or clutter the counter. Convenience store countertops are almost always a “Formica” type plastic laminate that will readily accept a counter mat with a low tack pressure sensitive back or a non skid backing. Counter mats with foam backs won’t stay in place or reserve the space for the advertiser.

Appropriate types of mats

• Low tack pressure sensitive counter mats
These counter mats have a low tack pressure sensitive adhesive mounted to the back . The pressure sensitive adhesive is repositionable making them easy to apply. They are ideal for convenience stores as they stay in place and “reserve” the space for the advertiser.

•Non skid rubber backed mats

These counter mats have a non skid rubber or vinyl back, mounted to the back of the mat to keep it from scooting around on the counter. The thin construction makes them work well, but they don’t “reserve” the space like a low tack mat.

Face Materials

•Scratch resistant vinyl
Won’t show scuffing or light scratches. Will maintain its original appearance longer that other materials. This would be the material of choice for a top quality mat for a convenience store, unless the buyer insists on a gloss appearance.

•Clear soft vinyl (polish/matte flexible vinyl)
Protects the printing better that the white soft vinyl as its is printed wrong reading. Can be printed with either the gloss or matte surface up. Good quality – low cost.

• Press polish rigid vinyl

Has great initial high gloss appearance, but shows scuffing and scratches easily.
Backing Materials

•Low Tack pressure sensitive backing
“Best” application for convenience stores as it “Reserves” the space for the advertiser. Low tack pressure sensitive will easily release from the counter top and leave no residue. Has been extensively used by many advertisers with no field problems.

•Non skid vinyl backing
Works well on the counter top and doesn’t scoot around on the counter like a foam backed mat will. Doesn’t reserve the space like a low tack mat will as it can easily be moved aside by another advertiser to let them put their mat in its place.
